The time has arrived minions, and the countdown has begun! Choosing has been super hard, and I've changed my mind too many times to count. I'm sure you know how hard it is to choose your favorite books, especially when you only have 10 slots and a years worth of books to choose from *pulls hair*. But I've settled it all...for now...knowing me I'll rearrange again but whatever. I told you I was picking books that really struck me, the ones that left me with serious book hangovers, had my emotions scattered all over the place and left me with a deeply lasting impression. The Deep End of the Sea by Heather Lyons is one such book. I was unprepared for the intensity, rawness and emotional whiplash this book dishes out. It's the first book I've ever read by her, and obviously Heather is a, now, fully fledged member of the Jungle. I bow down to her creative genius, because honestly minions this book? It's a spin on Greek mythology you have not encountered before, and if you're a history buff like me? Well you'll think you've died and gone to book heaven. As many of you know I'm incapable of a short review, so rather than rewrite one for you here's the link to the Review page HERE. I remember writing the review like it was only a short while ago, I spent hours trying to get into words how I felt, and I think it's of my best reviews so far. So to further share the awesomeness of The Deep End of the Sea, I have the beautiful cover and synopsis below with buy links! What if all the legends you’ve learned were wrong? Brutally attacked by one god and unfairly cursed by another she faithfully served, Medusa has spent the last two thousand years living out her punishment on an enchanted isle in the Aegean Sea. A far cry from the monster legends depict, she’s spent her time educating herself, gardening, and desperately trying to frighten away adventure seekers who occasionally end up, much to her dismay, as statues when they manage to catch her off guard. As time marches on without her, Medusa wishes for nothing more than to be given a second chance at a life stolen away at far too young an age. But then comes a day when Hermes, one of the few friends she still has and the only deity she trusts, petitions the rest of the gods and goddesses to reverse the curse. Thus begins a journey toward healing and redemption, of reclaiming a life after tragedy, and of just how powerful friendship and love can be—because sometimes, you have to sink in the deep end of the sea before you can rise back up again. Of course I have to pimp my girl Heather out, you are missing out on some pure book goodness minions, so I'd start stalking if I were you. Heather Lyons has always had a thing for words—She’s been writing stories since she was a kid. In addition to writing, she’s also been an archaeologist and a teacher. Heather is a rabid music fan, as evidenced by her (mostly) music-centric blog, and she’s married to an even larger music snob. They’re happily raising three kids who are mini music fiends who love to read and be read to. Now just because my reviews too long to rewrite or copy onto here, does in no way mean I can't share some of the highlights from said review... "It has to be one of the best interpretations of the Medusa myth, there was sorrow, pain, drama, angst, romance, mystery and adventure." "Heather holds nothing back when delving into the mind of a survivor, Dusa was so self-deprecating at the beginning and it broke my heart, but through friendship and love she finds her way." "Hermes....He would build her up when she was at her lowest, and helped her to understand she was never really a monster. A real message of how appearances mean little, when it's the beauty of the heart one hopes to capture." "Heather is an author to be on the lookout for, her writing is so melodically beautiful it takes the NA genre to a whole new level. She does an outstanding job of conveying the message of Medusa's story to the reader, one of hope, love, strength and justice." |
